Improving your duct system can:

Arrow

Improve Comfort – Sealing and insulating ducts can help with comfort problems than many of us have experienced, such as rooms that are too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.

Arrow

Enhance Indoor Air Quality – Fumes from common household or garden chemicals, insulation particles, and dust can enter your duct system, exacerbating asthma and allergy problems. Sealing your ducts can help improve your indoor air quality by reducing pollutants entering ducts and circulating throughout your home.

Arrow
Promote Safety – During normal operation, gas appliances such as water heaters and clothes dryers release combustion gases (like carbon monoxide) through their venting systems. Leaky ductwork in your heating and cooling system may cause “backdrafting,” where these gases are drawn back into the living space, rather than expelled to the outdoors. Sealing leaks can reduce this risk.

Improving your duct system can:

Save Money – Leaky ducts can reduce the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent. Sealing and insulating your ducts increases efficiency, lowers your energy bills, and can often pay for itself in energy savings. Plus, if you have plans to install new heating and cooling equipment, a well-designed and sealed duct system may allow you to downsize to a smaller, less costly heating and cooling system that will provide better dehumidification.

Protect the Environment – Most power plants in the Tampa Bay Area burn fossil fuels to make electricity, releasing greenhouse gases. By sealing ductwork and using less energy at home, you can help reduce these emissions and fight global warming.

How Do I Know if My Duct System is Bad?

Ducts are used to distribute conditioned air throughout your house, but in typical houses, about 20% of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and unsealed joints, resulting in higher utility bills and difficulty in keeping the house comfortable, regardless of the thermostat setting.

Some of the signs that your home may have leaky, poorly insulated, or inefficient ducts are:
  • You have high summer and winter utility bills
  • You have rooms that are difficult to heat and cool
  • You have stuffy rooms that never seem to feel comfortable
  • Your ducts are located in an attic, unfinished basement, crawlspace, or the garage
  • You find tangled or kinked flexible ducts in your system

How Do I Improve the Performance of My Duct System?

Since ducts are usually concealed in walls, ceiling, and attics, repairing them can be difficult. Still, there are things that you can do to improve duct performance in your house. First you can start by sealing air leaks using mastic sealant or metal tape and insulating all the ducts that you can access. Don’t use duct tape, it is not long-lasting. Also, make sure that the connections at vents and registers are well-sealed where they meet the walls and ceiling. These are typical locations to find leaks and detached ductwork.

Your home’s ductwork is one of the most important components of your HVAC system. Because of how important your ducts are, hiring a licensed contractor is the best way to ensure that they work well and consistently. You want a contractor that will, at the very least:

  • Inspect your whole duct system, including the attic, crawlspace and garage.
  • Evaluate your system’s supply and return air balance. Many systems have air return ducts that are too small.
  • Repair damaged and disconnected ducts and straighten out flexible ducts that are tangled or crushed.
  • Seal all leaks and connections with mastic, metal tape, or an aerosol-based sealant.
  • Seal all registers and grills tightly to the ducts.
  • Insulate ducts in unconditioned areas with duct insulation that carries an R-value of 6 or higher.
  • Include a new filter as part of any duct system improvement.
  • Evaluate air flow after repairs are completed.

I called the Comfort Authority because I was not happy with my previous HVAC service company. I chose them based on universally positive reviews on Google, Better Business Bureau, Yelp and Angie's List. Making an appointment was easy. Rick Haven arrived on schedule and listened patiently as I explained all the problems I was having with my system. He then proceeded to do a thorough examination of our compressor and air handler. He showed us pictures of each component and explained all the readings he obtained in his tests. We now feel confident our system is in good working order. Thanks Rick. Hope you enjoyed the soup. This is a follow-up review. It’s been 2 years since my original post. Unfortunately, time had not been kind to our 10 year old HVAC system. It’s time for a replacement. During our annual checkup, our technician, Tony, pointed out a couple of costly repairs that needed to be done. Rather than sinking $2000 into an old system, we agreed to meet with one of their specialists to discuss a new system. Derrick arrived the same day and spent about 90 minutes evaluating our system and discussing our options. We decided to go with a new system that could be installed the next day. The following morning 2 technicians arrived and began the work of removing our outdoor unit as well as the air handler which is in our second-floor attic. Gary and Rob were excellent. Very thorough, neat and professional. It took more than 8 hours to complete the installation. We now have a reliable system that we hope will keep our home cool for many years to come. Thanks for the hard work. Follow-up review. I called the Comfort Authority since it was the first cold day of the season since our new system was installed. The system was not blowing in warm air, so I gave them a call and they were able to send someone right out to diagnose the problem. Apparently a valve the controls whether the system produces cool or warm air was not tightened properly when the system was installed. Problem quickly solved by technical Glenn Betancourt. Thanks. Follow-up review. Michael Kennedy came out and performed our annual system check-up and maintenance. He was very thorough and communicated well throughout the process. He identified a failed UV unit that has been on the system and its predecessor for a number of years and was able to replace it with a new unit during the same visit. Very happy with Michael's work and the Comfort Authority in general. Follow-up review. Ura came out to perform our annual system check. He was very thorough and friendly and seemed to be interested in us as people rather than just customers. While he didn’t find anything wrong with our 2 year old system, he did point out a couple of maintenance items that needed attention. He was able to replace the UV bulb in our air handler and t to he bulb in our air purification system during the same visit. Very professional job and a truly pleasant person to have in our home. We hope to have him back next year when it time for our check up. Thanks

Luis took great care of us. He is a very nice, polite young man. He explained everything he was doing while he was doing it. He showed me the leak detector which was unfortunately beeping when placed next to both our units. He worked with me to get me the best price on our repair. We are happy to know he will be coming back when he gets the part to install it. I bought a service plan because I trust this company and will be using them again (when I have to). I definitely recommend them.
