Why is my heat pump blowing air but not cooling or heating?

This often happens when the refrigerant is low, the reversing valve fails, or the airflow is blocked. In Tampa’s humid climate, clogged filters and dirty coils are common causes that reduce performance. A professional repair includes checking refrigerant levels, inspecting valves, and cleaning or replacing components to restore full operation.

How do I know if I should repair or replace my heat pump?

Repairs are usually the right choice if the system is under 10 years old and the issue is minor. If the heat pump is older, frequently breaks down, or faces costly repairs such as compressor replacement, replacement may be more cost-effective. A licensed technician can evaluate system age, repair history, and energy efficiency before making a recommendation.

Can power surges or storms damage a heat pump in Tampa?

Yes, Florida’s frequent storms and lightning strikes can damage electrical components inside a heat pump. Surge protectors and routine inspections help prevent breakdowns caused by power fluctuations. If your system stops working after a storm, professional repair is essential before restarting it.

How often should I schedule heat pump maintenance after a repair?

Even after a successful repair, ongoing maintenance is critical to prevent future problems. In Tampa’s climate, experts recommend two seasonal tune-ups per year: one in spring before cooling season and one in fall before heating season. This helps keep refrigerant levels, airflow, and electrical systems in peak condition.

What causes a heat pump to freeze up in Tampa’s climate?

Even in Florida, heat pumps can freeze when airflow is restricted or refrigerant levels are low. Dirty coils, clogged filters, or malfunctioning defrost controls are the most common culprits. A technician can safely thaw the unit, correct the problem, and prevent further damage.

Will repairing my heat pump improve indoor air quality?

Yes, in many cases. Repairs that restore airflow, fix leaks, and clean coils help reduce dust, moisture, and contaminants circulating in the home. Pairing repairs with duct services or indoor air quality upgrades can further improve the comfort and health of your living space.
