Your HVAC filter is how your home removes dust, pet dander, pollen, and dirt particles from the air you breathe. The filter’s MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating helps you know how effective the filter is in trapping particles. In fact, the higher the MERV rating the higher the efficiency level is of that filter. The four main types of filters include the following:

Fiberglass air filters

  • Inexpensive and disposable
  • MERV rating of 4
  • Strain AC unit less getting particles filtered but do not filter smaller particles well

Pleated air filters

  • Made of polyester or cotton folds
  • More expensive than fiberglass but still affordable
  • MERV rating of 5-8 depending on filter
  • Better than fiberglass at trapping smaller particles including pet dander, mold spores, and pollen

HEPA filters

  • Higher Efficiency Particulate Air filters are recommended for people with allergies and other respiratory issues
  • Screens up to 99.97% of pollen, dust, pet dander, mold, and other airborne irritants
  • MERV rating of 11+

UV filters

  • These specialized filters are used in air cleaners built into your AC unit
  • Filters kill viruses and bacteria but are not very efficient in removing dust and other particles
  • MERV rating of 13
  • Homeowners seeking the best possible air quality recommend these filters in conjunction with other filtration
